This remarkable midcentury residence was designed by architect Otto Stark, who designed Chicago’s iconic BlueCross BlueShield Building (1968) at 55 W. Wacker Drive. (For historical information about the house, please visit Building Stories.)

Our team’s intent was to renovate the entire home for functionality while adhering as closely as possible to its original footprint. We relocated the kitchen to the front of the house to make way for a living room at the back with a full view of a serene wooded area and pond. An aging circular staircase presented a safety hazard, so we replaced it with an updated version featuring rift sawn white oak. Two existing bedrooms and a bathroom were merged to create a spacious master suite. A skylight was moved and waterfall paneling introduced to add elements of visual interest reinforcing the dining space. New windows, powder room, a third-stall garage and a screened porch were among additional updates. One-of-kind, hand-carved entry doors - acquired by Stark himself from Spain for the home but no longer functional - were resplendently repurposed as a master bath vanity and a living room cabinet.
